North Miami's Chapter 12 (Nuisances) requires properties to be maintained free of weeds, overgrowth, and debris. Vegetation exceeding 8 inches is considered a nuisance. Chapter 5 (Building Standards) further requires all properties and structures to be maintained in good condition. Tree removal or damage requires a permit from Community Planning & Development.
Under Chapter 12 of the North Miami Code, property owners must keep their lots free of weeds, overgrown vegetation, and accumulations of debris that constitute nuisances. Grass and weeds exceeding 8 inches in height violate the ordinance. The requirement covers the entire property including front, side, and rear yards as well as adjacent swales and alleyways. Chapter 5 adds that all properties must be substantially free of conditions that create health, safety, or aesthetic hazards. Dead or dying vegetation must be removed and replaced. Invasive plant species should be managed to prevent spread. Tree removal, trimming of protected species, or damage to native and approved non-native trees requires a permit from the Community Planning & Development Department. The city encourages Florida-Friendly Landscaping practices that reduce water usage and maintenance while supporting local ecology. Miami-Dade County's Landscape Ordinance (Chapter 18A) also applies, setting minimum standards for landscaping on developed properties.
Property owners receive a Notice of Violation with a compliance deadline. Failure to comply results in the city abating the nuisance and assessing costs via property lien. Contact Code Compliance at (305) 895-9825 to report weed or maintenance violations.
