Renton limits grass, weeds, and uncultivated vegetation to 12 inches under RMC 1-3-3 nuisance provisions. Overgrown yards are abated by the city at owner expense when notice is ignored.
Under Renton Municipal Code 1-3-3 (Nuisances Defined) and RMC 6-1 (Public Nuisance Abatement), grass, weeds, and uncultivated vegetation exceeding 12 inches on developed residential parcels are declared a public nuisance. The rule targets fire risk, rodent harborage, and neighborhood aesthetics. Code Enforcement issues a written notice requiring correction within 10 to 14 days. If the owner fails to comply, the city may abate the nuisance by mowing or clearing the property and assess costs plus administrative fees to the owner as a lien on the property. Undeveloped lots, farms, and designated natural areas are generally exempt, as are native plant gardens, food gardens, and meadow-style landscapes with intentional design. Critical area buffers along Cedar River, May Creek, and wetlands under RMC 4-3-050 have restrictions on clearing vegetation. Street frontage and visibility triangles at intersections must be maintained below 30 inches under RMC 4-4-080 to preserve sight distance. Dead trees, dry brush, and yard debris that pose fire risk can also be abated separately under fire code provisions.
Written notice followed by administrative abatement. Costs plus 20 percent admin fee assessed as property lien under RMC 6-1. Repeat violations escalate fines.
