Kent City Code Title 8 nuisance provisions require property owners to keep grass and weeds from growing into a fire or pest nuisance. Typical enforcement occurs when grass exceeds about 12 inches or harbors vermin.
Kent does not publish a single inch-number for grass height but Kent City Code Chapter 8.01 on public nuisances and Chapter 8.08 defines vegetation that poses fire hazard, harbors rodents, blocks sight distance at intersections, or constitutes a visual blight as a public nuisance. Enforcement officers in Code Enforcement typically issue notice when grass and weeds exceed roughly 12 inches or when dry vegetation sits adjacent to structures during fire season. Grass on parking strips adjacent to the street must not overhang sidewalks or block driver sight lines. Vacant lots receive the same duty as occupied parcels. After a complaint and inspection, the city issues a notice giving the owner 10 to 14 days to abate. If ignored, Kent may abate the nuisance and record a lien for costs plus an administrative fee. Xeriscapes and native meadows are allowed if intentionally designed, mulched, and maintained.
