Kent residents may trim private trees for routine maintenance without a permit. Street trees and trees in Critical Areas require city approval under Kent City Code Title 15 before significant work.
Routine pruning to remove dead wood, maintain shape, or clear building clearances on a private-property tree does not require a Kent permit. However, topping, removal of more than 25 percent of the live crown, or work on a street tree or a tree in a Critical Area buffer (streams, wetlands, steep slopes) requires review under Kent City Code Chapter 15.08 on tree preservation. Street trees in the public right of way are city property, and pruning must follow city standards, typically ISA best practices, with Public Works authorization. Property owners are responsible for keeping tree limbs from blocking sidewalks (8 feet clearance) and streets (14 feet). Work near power lines should be coordinated with Puget Sound Energy. Hiring an ISA Certified Arborist is strongly recommended, and arborists working in the right of way must carry liability insurance and any required business license.
