Kent treats overgrown and noxious weeds as public nuisances under Title 8. Owners must control King County listed noxious weeds and keep yards from becoming fire or rodent hazards.
Under Kent City Code Chapter 8.01, weeds that exceed reasonable height, harbor rodents, block sight distance, or create fire hazard are nuisances subject to abatement. Kent also enforces the King County Noxious Weed List maintained under RCW 17.10, which designates Class A, B, and C weeds that owners must control on their parcels. Priority weeds in the Kent area include tansy ragwort, Scotch broom, English ivy, Himalayan blackberry, garlic mustard, poison hemlock, and knotweed. Herbicide use near wetlands and the Green River is restricted under state Department of Ecology rules. Residents should check the King County Noxious Weed Control Board for species-specific guidance and may request free site visits. Unabated infestations can result in county enforcement and costs. Violations of city nuisance provisions follow the same abatement and lien process as other nuisance issues.
