Sioux Falls, SD Landscaping Rules: Native Plants (2026)

Sioux Falls's weed/grass ordinance (IPMC § 302.4 as locally adopted) carves out four categories of vegetation from the 8-inch height ceiling: cultivated flower and vegetable gardens, agricultural crops/pastures, wildflower display gardens, and areas formally designated by the Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation director as 'natural or native planting areas.' This means a homeowner intentionally establishing native prairie species (big bluestem, switchgrass, butterfly milkweed, purple coneflower, black-eyed Susan, etc.) is not subject to the lawn-height limit so long as the planting is tended and identifiable as a landscape feature rather than abandoned weeds. The city promotes this through the Prairie and Pollinator Garden Kit program — partnership with the Minnehaha Conservation District — which provides curated South Dakota-native seed packets and an instruction booklet. Native grasses in the kits routinely reach 18 inches or taller without violating the ordinance. Front-yard setbacks under Section 160.485 (Landscape Standards) still require at least 90% living ground cover, so native plantings satisfy that requirement while turf-only landscaping is not mandatory.
