Tree removal permit rules in Stark County, OH — sometimes called heritage tree, protected tree, or street tree ordinances — list which trees require a permit before you can cut them down.
Stark County has no general tree-removal code for private yards. In Canton, owners must remove dead or hazardous trees; the city can order removal of diseased or dangerous trees within 30 days and, if ignored, remove them and charge you.
Removing a healthy tree in your own yard is generally unregulated by Stark County; townships and cities govern it. Canton Codified Ordinance 917.06(a) gives the city discretionary authority to order removal of any private tree that is a hazard to life or city property or that harbors insects or disease threatening other trees; the owner must comply within 30 days of notice. Ordinance 917.05(a) separately requires owners to remove dead trees near public ways, restoring the ground and removing the stump. Failure lets the city remove the tree and place the cost on the owner's tax bill.
City may remove the tree and charge removal costs to the owner's property-tax notice; chapter penalty up to $150, each day a separate offense.
