Hampton, VA Landscaping Rules: Tree Trimming (2026)

Hampton City Code § 34-41 makes it unlawful to cut, trim or spray any tree, or to place signs, on, under or over a city street without a permit from the director of public works. Section 34-49 sets the standard for that specific permit: the director may issue it only when the work is fully justified in the public interest, and the permit itself must prescribe how the trimming, cutting or spraying is carried out. Applicants must submit a sketch under § 34-43 showing any tree to be removed and the location of trees and shrubs within and adjacent to the right-of-way. The requirement covers trees on or over streets and the right-of-way, not trees elsewhere on private property.
