Trimming City-owned street and parkway trees requires City approval, and any tree work during bird breeding season faces strict nesting-survey requirements under the city tree-protection law.
Under the Tree Protection and Preservation law in Redondo Beach Municipal Code Title 5, Chapter 11, City (municipal) trees in parkways and public areas are maintained by the City, and residents may not trim or top them without authorization. The code restricts trimming or removal of protected trees during breeding and nesting season (roughly January through September): such work is allowed only where a qualified arborist finds a genuine health-and-safety danger, and a qualified biologist must survey for nesting birds within 300 feet (500 feet for raptors) and report before work proceeds. Trimming a private-yard tree is generally allowed, but parkway-tree work and any encroachment into the public right-of-way require coordination with Public Works.
Unauthorized trimming or topping of a City tree, or work during nesting season without the required arborist and biologist clearance, can trigger code-enforcement penalties and replacement requirements.
