Santa Cruz §9.56.060 requires permits for any significant work that affects designated Heritage Trees or Heritage Shrubs. §9.56.090 requires a state tree-care license for work on protected trees.
Significant work includes pruning, root pruning, trimming, cutting, or any action altering the physical structure of a heritage tree or shrub. Routine non-significant pruning of non-heritage trees on private property is generally unregulated. Street trees and parkway trees fall under Parks & Recreation permit jurisdiction. Tree care for protected trees must be performed by a State of California licensed tree contractor.
Misdemeanor under §9.56.110; mitigation/replacement under §9.56.100.
