The Parkways Department controls trees on parish rights-of-way and trims hazardous, dead, diseased or low limbs. If the parish cannot do the work promptly, a property owner may get a permit to hire a qualified company at their own expense.
Parish ordinance gives the Parkways Department authority over trees, shrubs and plants growing on parish-owned right-of-way and other parish property. The department removes hazardous deadwood and decayed, diseased and low limbs that interfere with traffic, keeping minimum clearances of eight feet over structures, seven feet over sidewalks, fourteen feet over driveways and local roads, and sixteen feet over arterial roads. When Parkways cannot act as soon as requested, an inspector investigates and writes a permit letting the owner have the tree work done by a qualified company at their own cost.
Doing tree work on the parish right-of-way without a Parkways permit, or damaging protected right-of-way trees, is enforced by the department; unpermitted work can be halted and cited.
