Water restrictions in Apex, NC β also called the watering schedule, outdoor irrigation rules, or drought ordinance β set which days and hours you can run sprinklers or irrigation.
Apex enforces year-round irrigation restrictions on its water system, sourced from Jordan Lake through the jointly owned Cary/Apex Water Treatment Facility (CAWTF) serving Apex, Cary, Morrisville, Wake County RTP, and RDU Airport. Lawn irrigation is allowed three days a week on an alternate-day schedule (odd addresses Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday; even Wednesday/Friday/Sunday). Mondays are no-irrigation days. Hand-held hose watering is allowed every day. Violations carry written notice for the first offense and up to $1,000 per day for subsequent violations.
The Apex Water Conservation Ordinance governs year-round outdoor watering. Permitted irrigation days are limited to three per week and assigned by street-address parity: odd-numbered addresses irrigate Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday; even-numbered addresses irrigate Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday; Monday is closed to lawn irrigation system-wide. Hand-held hose watering β meaning a hose with an active shut-off nozzle held by the user β is allowed any day. Drip irrigation is exempt from the schedule. The ordinance prohibits water falling on impervious surfaces such as driveways, roads and sidewalks, and prohibits water running off the property. Rain sensors are required on all automatic irrigation systems and must shut off when 1/4 inch or more of rain has fallen. A 45-day New Landscape Permit allows increased irrigation for new plantings, sod installation, or bare areas exceeding 50% of residential yard space; over-seeding established grass does not qualify. The town encourages applying no more than one inch of water once a week (including rainfall) and irrigating in early morning or late at night to limit evaporation. Apex's Water Resource Director coordinates with Cary and Morrisville on drought-stage actions; Jordan Lake's normal pool elevation is 216.0 feet and CAWTF allocation status drives stage triggers.
First violation: written notice issued by Apex Water Resources. Subsequent violations: up to $1,000 per violation per day. Repeat offenders may have automatic irrigation controllers disabled by the Town. Report violations to Water Resources at (919) 362-8166.
