Unincorporated Washoe County has no local weed ordinance. Noxious weeds are governed statewide by NRS Chapter 555: landowners must control designated noxious weeds. Reports go to the Nevada Department of Agriculture or UNR Cooperative Extension.
The county has 'not adopted an ordinance specific to the regulation of "weeds."' The controlling law is Nevada NRS Chapter 555, which requires every person owning, controlling or occupying land to control all designated noxious weeds as required by the State Quarantine Officer. 'Noxious weed' means any species of plant which is, or is likely to be, a public nuisance, detrimental or destructive and difficult to control. Boards of county commissioners may create weed control districts in unincorporated areas. Complaints about noxious weeds on private or public land are referred to the Nevada Department of Agriculture (775.353.3640) or UNR Cooperative Extension (775.784.4848).
Under NRS 555, failure to control designated noxious weeds can lead to a state-ordered abatement, with control costs assessed against the property owner.
