Edmonds, WA Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

ECC 8.48.190 lists the specific ways a vehicle cannot be stopped, stood or parked on a curbed street, and subsection (B)(3) flatly bars leaving any vehicle, attended or unattended, upon a designated bike lane. The same subsection also forbids parking that would narrow a travel lane to less than 10 feet for same-direction traffic, or shrink a cul-de-sac's usable radius below 35 feet, so the rule reads together as a street-clearance standard that bike lanes share with general travel lanes rather than a rule aimed only at cyclists.

A companion provision, ECC 8.48.170, requires the city traffic engineer to mark restrictions with signs, yellow curb paint, or yellow pavement striping before any no-parking rule is enforceable, so a bike lane has to be physically designated on the pavement for this section to apply to it. Separately, ECC Chapter 8.56 lets the traffic engineer close specific heavily traveled streets to bicycles and other nonmotorized traffic entirely and post signs to that effect; ECC 8.56.020, once titled to address bicycles on certain streets, was repealed by Ordinance 2849, and the surviving authority sits in ECC 8.56.030.

An officer who finds an unattended vehicle in violation of the bike lane rule can issue a notice of parking infraction, which must be filed with the Edmonds municipal court within 48 hours of issuance under ECC 8.48.200. The registered owner of the vehicle, not necessarily the driver, is presumed under ECC 8.48.220 to be the person responsible for the violation.
