Georgetown County, SC Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

Section 13.8-125, in Division 2 of Article VI of Chapter 13.8, bans driving a moped or a motor vehicle upon or within any public sidewalk or bicycle path area in unincorporated Georgetown County, or upon any bike path, except to cross it on a permanent or duly authorized temporary driveway. The covered "bicycle path" is defined in Section 13.8-121 as one owned or maintained by the county or the state, so paths inside shopping centers, apartment complexes, or office parks are outside the section's reach.

The same division bans blocking a sidewalk or bike path under Section 13.8-122, requires owners to trim vegetation obstructing one under Section 13.8-124, and preserves a narrow free-speech carve-out under Section 13.8-123 for stopping to talk without fully blocking passage. Section 13.8-125 itself prints no numeric fine, so an officer charging a driving violation relies on Section 1-6, the Code's general penalty provision, which sets a fine of not more than $200 or imprisonment of not more than 30 days for any Code violation that has no specific penalty stated.

Because the section reaches mopeds as well as motor vehicles, an electric moped ridden along a bike path off its authorized driveway crossing is covered the same as a car or truck. The division derives from Ordinance No. 2000-23, adopted June 14, 2000, and applies only in the unincorporated Waccamaw Neck, Murrells Inlet, Sampit, and Plantersville areas outside Georgetown, Andrews, and the Town of Pawleys Island, each of which enforces its own separate code.
