Lafayette, LA Mobility & Curb Rules: Bike Lane Rules (2026)

Sec. 98-214(a) of the Lafayette City-Parish Code, part of the shared mobility device article adopted in 2020, spells out exactly where a rented electric low-speed scooter may travel: in any bike lane in the city or unincorporated parish, on any sidewalk except those inside the Downtown Zoning District defined at Sec. 89-13(c)(4), or on a two-lane roadway posted at 35 miles per hour or less. Riders on a permitted sidewalk must yield to pedestrians and wheelchair users and give an audible signal before passing. Scooter users must also be at least 18 or hold a valid driver's license, park in compliance with the deployment rules of Sec.

98-209(d), and stay inside the geofenced service area set under Sec. 98-208. , riders cannot double up unless the scooter is built for it, cannot carry a bundle that keeps a hand off the handlebars, cannot tow anything, cannot ride more than one scooter at once, and cannot text while riding. The rules bind both the permittee operating the fleet and the individual rider, a scooter left blocking a bike lane, fire hydrant, ADA ramp, bus stop, or sidewalk under Sec. 98-209(d) is subject to immediate impoundment at the permittee's expense, and non-compliance by users can support a violation finding against the permittee under Sec. 98-213.
