Bike lanes on county roads are designed and maintained by Nassau County DPW, with some routes integrated into the regional Bethpage State Parkway and Wantagh Parkway bicycle paths. Riders must follow NY Vehicle and Traffic Law Article 34, including riding with traffic, yielding to pedestrians on shared paths, and using lights at night. Helmets are required for riders under 14. E-bike classes 1, 2, and 3 are permitted on most roads but restricted on some park paths. Local villages may post additional rules on sidewalk riding.
VTL violations carry fines up to a few hundred dollars; helmet-law violations for minors are typically dismissed if proof of helmet purchase is provided.
