Amplified music rules in Spartanburg County, SC — also called sound permit, PA system, or live music ordinances — set decibel limits, time-of-day restrictions, and when permits are required.
In the City of Spartanburg, amplified music is a violation if it is plainly audible 50 feet from the property line, or 50 feet from a vehicle. In unincorporated county areas, amplification that disturbs others beyond the premises is unlawful after a warning.
City of Spartanburg Code § 22-49 sets a bright-line: sound systems, radios, and instruments operated in a building are a violation when plainly audible 50 feet from the property line, and vehicle amplification is a violation when audible 50 feet from the vehicle. In unincorporated Spartanburg County, § 30-31 makes it unlawful to operate amplification so loud it disturbs others beyond the premises after a written warning, and bars vehicle or public right-of-way amplification that unreasonably disturbs others with no warning required. Special outdoor events can seek an exemption permit from the county under § 30-33.
City noise violations are enforced by police; county amplification violations are misdemeanors carrying a fine up to $500 or up to 30 days in jail.
