Barking dog rules in Butte County, CA — also called nuisance dog, dog noise, or excessive barking ordinances — define when a barking dog becomes a code violation and how complaints are handled.
Butte County Code Chapter 4 (Animals) defines a barking dog as one that barks, bays, cries, howls, or makes noise for an extended period of time that disturbs any person. "Extended period" means 60 minutes or more of incessant barking, or 60 minutes total of intermittent barking, in any 24-hour period.
Under Chapter 4 (Animals), the barking dog provision applies in unincorporated Butte County regardless of whether the dog is on private property. A neighbor must file a Barking Dog Complaint Form with Butte County Animal Control; the dog owner is then given a 10-day notice period to correct the problem. If barking continues after 10 days, the original complainant must file a second complaint accompanied by a sworn affidavit under penalty of perjury that the barking continues in violation of the ordinance. Continued violations can be prosecuted.
