Construction hours in San Mateo County, CA — sometimes called construction noise rules or contractor work-hour ordinances — set when contractors can run power tools, hammers, and heavy equipment.
Under County Code 4.88.360, construction, demolition, repair, remodeling and grading in unincorporated San Mateo County is exempt from noise limits only between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. on weekdays and 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays. No construction is allowed on Sundays, Thanksgiving or Christmas.
Section 4.88.360 (Exemptions) of the County Noise Control chapter exempts noise from demolition, construction, repair, remodeling or grading of real property from the general noise standards, but only if the activity does not take place between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. on weekdays, between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. on Saturdays, or at any time on Sundays, Thanksgiving and Christmas. In practical terms, permitted construction hours in the unincorporated county are 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, with no construction allowed at all on Sundays or on the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. Work performed outside these windows loses the exemption and must comply with the exterior noise limits in Section 4.88.330, which is generally not feasible for power equipment. These County rules apply only to unincorporated communities; each incorporated city sets its own construction-hour limits.
Construction outside the exempt hours is subject to enforcement under Chapter 4.88 by the County Sheriff and Code Enforcement (650) 363-4825. The Building Inspection Section can also be involved where a building permit is in effect.
