Lafayette, LA Noise Ordinances: Decibel Limits (2026)

Section 34-366(a) is the core numeric standard of Lafayette's noise control code: no person may operate any sound source in a manner that creates a sound level exceeding the Table I limits, measured at any location at or within the property line of the receptor property, and exceeding Table I is prima facie evidence of a violation. 00 dB(A) for industrial property 24 hours a day. 00 dB(A) specifically for sound from sewer treatment plants, sewer lift stations, and electric substations or switchyards. The section layers additional standards on top of Table I: impulsive sounds get a 20-decibel allowance above the table limits if they occur fewer than ten times an hour during the day or four times an hour at night, per § 34-366(b), and steady pure tones, a mechanical whine, hum, or buzz, get the Table I limit reduced by five dB(A) under § 34-366(d). These standards apply throughout Lafayette under § 34-363, regardless of zoning classification, and are administered by the noise control administrator appointed under § 34-364.
