San Antonio, TX Noise Ordinances: Outdoor Music (2026)

Live outdoor music at Texas dance halls, icehouses, breweries, and wedding venues is a distinctive cultural feature of the San Antonio metro. In unincorporated Bexar County, where the county cannot issue sound permits, outdoor concerts held at places like Floores Country Store in Helotes (just inside city limits) or independent venues on the far west side operate under TX Penal Code 42.01. The 30-foot-from-vehicle rule in 42.01(c) does not cleanly apply to large outdoor stages, but deputies still apply an unreasonable-noise standard. Within the City of San Antonio, Chapter 21 Article III requires a Special Event Amplified Sound Permit for any outdoor event with amplified music audible at the property line; daytime events may run to 10 PM weeknights, 11 PM Friday and Saturday, with a 10 PM Sunday cutoff. The St. Marys Strip entertainment district, Hemisfair, and Southtown operate under tailored rules. The Tobin Center and Majestic Theatre are indoor-rated for Chapter 21. Residents near Helotes (Old Town Helotes), Leon Valley (Huebner Road corridor), and Castle Hills should check their city code rather than assuming county rules apply. TABC-licensed venues must separately comply with alcohol-related noise conditions. Amplified worship services at outdoor venues have added First Amendment considerations but still must meet the reasonableness standard.
