LA County Code Chapter 12.08 restricts amplified sound and outdoor music in unincorporated areas to the same exterior noise standards by zone. Loudspeakers and amplified devices are specifically regulated under Section 12.08.450.
Section 12.08.450 prohibits the use of loudspeakers or sound-amplifying equipment that projects sound across property lines exceeding the zone-specific exterior noise standards under Section 12.08.390. In residential zones, this means amplified music cannot exceed 50 dBA during the day or 45 dBA at night as measured at the neighboring property line. Section 12.08.460 further restricts amplified sound near schools, churches, and hospitals. Outdoor events requiring amplified sound in unincorporated areas may need a temporary use permit from the Department of Regional Planning. The ordinance applies to live music, DJ equipment, PA systems, and any electronically amplified sound. Enforcement is handled by Environmental Health and the LA County Sheriff's Department.
Violation of Section 12.08.450 is a misdemeanor punishable by fines up to $1,000 and/or six months in jail. Equipment used in violation may be subject to seizure. Repeated violations may result in nuisance abatement proceedings.
