Quiet hours in Prince George's County, MD — also called the noise ordinance, nighttime noise rules, or residential quiet time — define the hours during which excessive noise is prohibited.
Prince George's County sets countywide nighttime noise limits under the Subtitle 19 Noise Control ordinance. Nighttime runs 9 p.m. to 7 a.m., when residential areas drop to a 55 dBA cap versus 65 dBA during the day.
The County Code defines nighttime as 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. and daytime as 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. During nighttime, the maximum allowable noise level at a receiving residential property falls from 65 dBA (day) to 55 dBA (night); commercial areas drop from 67 to 62 dBA, while industrial stays at 75 dBA. Separately, a person may not cause any noise that creates a 'noise disturbance' at any hour. The ordinance was substantially updated by CB-073-2024, effective December 2024. Note that incorporated cities such as Bowie, College Park, Laurel, Hyattsville, and Greenbelt enforce their own, sometimes stricter, quiet-hour codes on top of this county baseline.
First offense fines up to $1,000 (criminal misdemeanor or civil citation); $1,500 for each subsequent offense. Each day a violation continues is a separate offense, and jail up to 30 days is possible on conviction.
