Quiet hours in Lafayette Parish, LA β also called the noise ordinance, nighttime noise rules, or residential quiet time β define the hours during which excessive noise is prohibited.
Lafayette City-Parish Consolidated Government (LCG) regulates noise under Chapter 34, Article IV of the Code of Ordinances. Quiet hours run 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. on weekdays and 10:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. on weekends and federal holidays. Residential limits at the property line are 60 dB(A) daytime and 50 dB(A) nighttime; commercial zones are capped at 65 dB(A) at all hours. Sec. 34-366 sets the maximum permissible sound levels. Construction and refrigerated-truck operations within 250 feet of homes are restricted during quiet hours. Complaints and permits: LCG Alcohol and Noise Control, (337) 291-8675.
LCG Code Chapter 34, Article IV (Noise Control) is the primary ordinance for both the City of Lafayette and the unincorporated parish. Sec. 34-366 sets maximum permissible sound levels by receiving land use: 60 dB(A) day / 50 dB(A) night for residential property lines, with HVAC equipment allowed up to 55 dB(A) at night, and 65 dB(A) for commercial property at all times. The night period begins at 10:00 p.m. and ends at 7:00 a.m. Monday through Friday and 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, Sunday, and federal holidays. Amplified sound on private property is measured inside the complainant's residence using C-weighting, fast response. Portable amplified equipment in public spaces may not be plainly audible beyond 100 feet during the day or 50 feet at night. Domestic animals not in a state of natural liberty may not produce more than 60 vocalizations within any ten-minute period. Construction activity is prohibited during quiet hours unless authorized as an emergency. Commercial trucks with refrigeration units cannot idle within 250 feet of a residential property between 10:00 p.m. and the morning end of quiet hours. Louisiana state law (La. R.S. 14:103) supplies a parallel disturbing-the-peace charge for noise that disturbs the public tranquility. Permits for amplified events and exceptions are issued by LCG Alcohol and Noise Control at the Clifton Chenier Center.
Violations of the LCG noise ordinance carry fines starting at $150 for a first offense and may rise to $500 and/or up to six months in jail under the parish's general penalty (Sec. 1-9). Each day a violation continues may be charged as a separate offense. The Lafayette Police Department, Sheriff's Office, and Noise Control officers enforce the ordinance; equipment may be impounded for unpermitted amplified events.
