Charleston County makes it unlawful to play vehicular music or sound amplification so that it is plainly audible at 50 feet from the vehicle or within a neighbor's residential dwelling. Loud, revving or modified-exhaust engine noise that disturbs the peace is also prohibited.
Section 3-41 of the Livability chapter targets car stereos and vehicle sound systems: it is unlawful to play or operate any radio or other vehicular music or sound amplification or reproduction equipment so that it is plainly audible 50 feet away in any direction from the vehicle, or plainly audible within another's residential dwelling. Separately, operating motorized vehicles that emit loud, unnecessary or long-continued noise — including engine revving and modified exhaust — that disturbs the peace can be cited under the general noise provisions.
A vehicle-noise violation under Section 3-41 is a misdemeanor with a fine of up to $500.00.
