Columbia County, FL Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

Columbia County regulates vehicle stereo noise under Sec. 74-105(f), part of the Article V noise-control chapter adopted by Ord. No. 2020-07 on August 6, 2020. The subsection covers operating or amplifying sound from a radio, tape player, compact disc player, loudspeaker or other mechanical or electronic sound-making device or instrument, including a portable sound-making device, whether it sits inside the vehicle's interior or is mounted on its exterior. The violation turns on distance and time rather than a subjective disturbance test: the sound must be plainly audible at 50 feet or more from the vehicle, and the restriction applies between 10:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. on Sunday nights through Friday mornings, widening to 10:00 p.m. through 10:00 a.m. on Friday nights through Sunday mornings to cover the weekend.

That is a narrower, vehicle-specific standard than Sec. 74-105(e)'s general radio and stereo rule, which applies at any hour once it unreasonably disturbs neighbors in a residential area or carries 50 feet in a commercial or public space. The Columbia County Sheriff's Office enforces Sec. 74-105(f) under Sec. 74-108 and can pursue a warning or educational contact before a deputy cites a driver or vehicle owner. A confirmed violation is a civil infraction under Sec. 74-109(a), fined up to $500.00, and Sec. 74-109(b) allows each occurrence, including each night a car stereo is heard blasting past the 50-foot mark during the restricted hours, to be punished as a separate offense. Sec. 74-102 limits the rule to unincorporated Columbia County outside Lake City's municipal boundary.
