Darlington County, SC Noise Ordinances: Vehicle Noise (2026)

Darlington County Code Section 22-96 makes it unlawful to create any loud, disturbing or unnecessary noise detrimental to the life or health of any individual, or noise that disturbs the quiet and peace of any citizen, anywhere in the unincorporated county. Section 22-97 lists specific unlawful acts, three of which target vehicles directly. Subsection (1) bars sounding a horn, whistle or signal device so as to create an unreasonably loud or harsh sound, or for an unreasonable length of time, except as a danger signal or when required by law.

Subsection (4) bars operating a vehicle so out of repair, so loaded or so operated that it creates loud, unnecessary grating, grinding, rattling or screeching of tires or other noise, covering a failing muffler or dragging exhaust. Subsection (11) specifically targets vehicle repair and maintenance work: conducting, operating or maintaining any operation to repair, improve or enhance a motorized vehicle within 500 feet of a residential dwelling is unlawful if the work causes loud or disturbing noise, reaching backyard mechanics and roadside repairs alike. Section 22-98 exempts lawfully permitted parades, manufacturing operations recognized by the state tax commission, and lawfully permitted vehicle races, so Darlington Raceway's sanctioned events are not swept into the ban.

Section 22-99 exempts noise from emergency work performed for public safety or to restore property after a calamity. Section 22-100 designates the county sheriff's department as the enforcing agency, but also lets any citizen or resident of the county seek enforcement directly through a magistrate of appropriate jurisdiction.
