Henrico County Code Sec. 10-68(7) bans amplified sound from a motor vehicle plainly audible from outside at a distance of 50 feet or more. Ice-cream trucks may play music only 7 a.m.-9 p.m. Virginia Code Sec. 15.2-919 also lets localities limit motorcycle noise.
The Amplified sound from vehicles provision prohibits any car radio, stereo, tape or CD player, or loudspeaker audible 50+ feet from the vehicle, the basis for a loud car-stereo citation. The only carve-out: ice cream trucks and mobile food vehicles may emit sound between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. General unnecessary noise in vehicle operation is addressed separately in County Code ch. 22 (Sec. 22-36). Under Code of Virginia Sec. 15.2-919 a locality may regulate motorcycle noise, and Sec. 15.2-917 addresses sport-shooting ranges.
Sec. 10-67 fines up to $500, $1,000, then $2,500; each day a separate offense. A police officer may cite when the violation occurs in their presence.
