Under TMFPD's fire code, charcoal and open-flame cooking devices cannot be used on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction. Small LP-gas grills (container water capacity 2.5 lbs or less) and one- and two-family homes are exempt.
TMFPD applies IFC 308.1.4: charcoal burners and other open-flame cooking devices shall not be operated on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction. Exceptions cover one- and two-family dwellings, buildings equipped with fire sprinklers, and LP-gas cooking devices whose container has a water capacity not greater than 2.5 pounds (typical small tabletop grills). This chiefly affects apartment and condo balconies. During summer fire restrictions TMFPD may prohibit charcoal grilling countywide while still allowing propane, electric, and pellet barbecues, which are the recommended alternatives during high fire danger.
Operating a charcoal or open-flame grill on an apartment balcony contrary to IFC 308.1.4, or grilling with open flame during a fire restriction, can result in a citation from TMFPD.
