Reno adopts the International Fire Code through RMC Title 14 (Building and Construction) with Northern Nevada amendments. IFC Section 308.1.4 prohibits LP-gas containers over 1 lb on combustible balconies of buildings with three or more dwelling units and requires charcoal grills to be 10 feet from buildings. Single-family detached homes are unrestricted.
Reno enforces the IFC through RMC Title 14 and the Northern Nevada Code Amendments adopted jointly by Reno, Sparks, and Washoe County. IFC Section 308.1.4 prohibits open-flame cooking devices on combustible balconies or within 10 feet of combustible construction at buildings with three or more dwelling units. Exceptions apply where the building, balcony, or deck is protected by an NFPA 13 or 13R automatic sprinkler system or where the balcony is non-combustible. LP-gas containers exceeding 1 pound water capacity may not be stored on or under combustible balconies of multi-family buildings; the propane tank must be removed from the grill and stored separately. Solid-fuel devices such as charcoal must remain 10 feet from any building. Single-family detached lots have no fire-code clearance for grills. Reno Fire Department enforces violations. Heightened restrictions apply during declared red-flag fire conditions in foothill neighborhoods.
Reno Fire Code violations under RMC Title 14 carry civil penalties and may escalate to misdemeanor charges for repeat or willful conduct. Multi-family lease violations may trigger eviction. Fires that damage neighbor property create personal civil liability and may void renter insurance.
