Tacoma adopts the International Fire Code through TMC Title 3 (Fire Prevention) as Tacoma Fire Code. IFC Section 308.1.4 prohibits open-flame cooking devices and LP-gas containers larger than 1 lb on combustible balconies of buildings containing three or more dwelling units when within 10 feet of combustible construction. Single-family backyards are not restricted. Wood and charcoal grilling may be limited during Puget Sound Clean Air Agency burn bans.
TMC Title 3 adopts the International Fire Code as the Tacoma Fire Code. IFC Section 308.1.4 prohibits charcoal grills, propane grills, and any other open-flame cooking device on balconies and within 10 feet of combustible construction at any building with three or more residential units; LP-gas cylinders larger than 1 lb water capacity are also prohibited on such balconies. Exceptions: one- and two-family dwellings (single-family homes and duplexes), and balconies served by an automatic fire-sprinkler system, and listed electric heating elements. Outdoor LP-gas storage at residential premises is governed by IFC Chapter 61 (LP-Gas): cylinders up to 100 lb water capacity are allowed outdoors at least 5 feet from doorways, windows, and openings into combustible buildings. Single-family backyard grilling is otherwise unregulated by Tacoma code but is subject to Puget Sound Clean Air Agency (PSCAA) burn bans, which prohibit wood and charcoal burning during declared episodes. Tacoma Fire Department's Fire Prevention Bureau (253-591-5740) enforces the balcony rule.
Operating a prohibited grill on a multi-family balcony is a violation of the Tacoma Fire Code under TMC Title 3 and is enforced by the Fire Prevention Bureau with a Notice and Order to remove the device. Continued violation can be referred for civil enforcement. Building owners frequently impose stricter no-grilling lease terms. Confirm specific penalty amounts with the Tacoma Fire Prevention Bureau at 253-591-5740.
