Built-in outdoor kitchens in Camarillo require building, gas, electrical, and plumbing permits from Building & Safety under CMC Title 16 (which adopts the California Building, Plumbing, Mechanical and Electrical Codes). Free-standing portable BBQs are permit-exempt. Setbacks for built-in structures follow CMC Chapter 19.14 R-1 zoning standards.
Under CMC 16.04 β which adopts the 2025 California Building, Residential, Plumbing, Mechanical and Electrical Codes β a built-in outdoor kitchen triggers permits in proportion to its scope: a building permit for the masonry or framing structure if it is attached to the dwelling or a permanent foundation; a gas-piping permit for any natural-gas or propane line extension; an electrical permit for any 120V/240V circuit run to lighting, refrigeration, or exhaust hoods; and a plumbing permit for water supply and waste drainage. Free-standing portable barbecues sitting on a patio do not require a permit. Outdoor kitchens must observe CMC Chapter 19.14 zoning setbacks (typically 5-foot side and 15-foot rear in R-1) and must not encroach onto easements. Gas lines must be tested by Building & Safety inspection before backfill. Apply at Camarillo Building & Safety (805-388-5360).
Building an outdoor kitchen without permits is a CMC Title 16 violation enforceable via stop-work order, double-fee retroactive permitting, and administrative citations. Unpermitted gas piping in particular can void homeowner's insurance and creates liability for any later fire or explosion.
