Camarillo requires pool safety barriers per CMC Title 16 and the California Building Code Section 3109. All residential swimming pools and spas must be enclosed by a barrier at least 60 inches high with self-closing, self-latching gates. The barrier must meet specific design standards to prevent child access.
Under CMC Title 16 and California Building Code Section 3109 (also California HSC Section 115921-115929), all residential swimming pools, spas, and hot tubs must be enclosed by a barrier at least 60 inches (5 feet) high. Gates must be self-closing and self-latching with the latch at least 54 inches from the ground. Barrier openings must not allow passage of a 4-inch sphere. Horizontal members that could serve as footholds must be on the pool side and spaced to prevent climbing. Chain-link fencing must have mesh not exceeding 1.75 inches. At least one of the following additional safety features is required for new pools: pool cover meeting ASTM F1346, pool alarm meeting ASTM E2208, door alarm on all house exits to the pool area, or self-closing/self-latching mechanisms on all doors and windows accessing the pool. Existing pools must be brought into compliance when major renovations occur. HOAs in Camarillo with community pools must maintain commercial-grade barriers and supervision protocols.
Pool barrier violations are building code violations under CMC Title 16 enforceable by code enforcement. Inadequate barriers may result in orders to cease pool use until compliance is achieved. Failure to comply can result in liens and legal action. Contact Community Development at (805) 388-5360.
