Camarillo's zoning code (CMC Title 19) establishes fence height limits of 6 feet in rear and side yards and 3 feet in front yards for residential zones. Higher fences may be allowed with a variance or conditional use permit. Sight triangle requirements at intersections and driveways limit fence heights for visibility.
CMC Title 19 sets standard residential fence height limits: 6 feet maximum in rear and interior side yards, and 3 feet (36 inches) maximum in required front yard setbacks. Open or see-through fences (wrought iron, picket) may be allowed at slightly greater heights in front yards. At street intersections and driveway approaches, sight triangle requirements limit fences and hedges to maintain driver visibility, typically 3 feet maximum within the sight triangle area. Corner lots may have additional restrictions on the street-side yard. Retaining walls are measured separately and may combine with fence height (a retaining wall plus fence combination is measured from the lower grade). Height is typically measured from the finished grade on the higher side of the fence. Variances for taller fences require a public hearing through the Planning Commission. In Camarillo's HOA communities, CC&Rs often specify approved fence styles, colors, and materials that may be more restrictive than city code.
Fences exceeding height limits without approval violate CMC Title 19 zoning standards. Code enforcement may require height reduction. Contact Community Development at (805) 388-5360 for variances or compliance questions.
