C. 12, adopting and amending the 2025 California Fire Code) governs backyard grills, fire-pits and other open-flame cooking or heating devices. The base rule bars candles, lanterns, kerosene heaters, gas-fired heaters, barbecues, fire-pits and similar devices from sitting on or near decorative material, on or near other combustible material, or within 10 feet of combustible construction. Two carve-outs soften that for cooking and heating: an open-flame cooking device, a charcoal or gas grill, a smoker, a fire-pit used to cook, only has to stay 10 feet from vegetation rather than from the structure itself, and an approved open-flame heating device at a one- or two-family dwelling gets the same 10-foot vegetation clearance.
