Oklahoma County has no dark-sky ordinance; Oklahoma City regulates outdoor lighting through §59-9800 requiring full-cutoff fixtures for parking lots and commercial properties over 1 acre. Residential lighting largely unregulated. No statewide dark-sky law. Edmond has similar commercial standards.
Oklahoma County does not have a formal dark-sky ordinance. Oklahoma City Municipal Code §59-9800 (Outdoor Lighting Standards) applies primarily to commercial, industrial, and multifamily developments, requiring full-cutoff (fully shielded) fixtures that direct light below a horizontal plane. Residential single-family lighting is not subject to shielding requirements in OKC. Parking lot lighting must not exceed 0.5 foot-candles at property lines adjoining residential zones and 2.0 foot-candles at commercial property lines. Maximum pole height is 30 feet in commercial zones, 20 feet near residential. LED lighting installed after 2020 should be 3000K or below per OKC guidelines, though this is recommended rather than mandated. Edmond Code §22-301 imposes similar commercial standards. Stadium and sports field lighting has specific exemptions with curfew requirements (lights off by 10:30 PM on weekdays). The Oklahoma City Astronomy Club advocates for expanded dark-sky rules but none have passed. No formal International Dark-Sky Association designations exist in Oklahoma County. Bethany and Warr Acres follow OKC standards as they often adopt OKC code by reference.
Non-compliant commercial fixtures: OKC notice to correct within 30 days, fines $100 to $500. Parking lot light trespass over 0.5 fc: correction plus $200 to $1,000. Stadium curfew violations: $500 per occurrence. Residential lighting: generally not enforced unless creating nuisance.
