Under N.J.S.A. 39:4-56.5, a vehicle left more than 48 hours on a road or unauthorized property is presumed abandoned. Bergen County Police may tow vehicles from county roads; municipalities handle local streets.
New Jersey state law N.J.S.A. 39:4-56.5 governs abandoned vehicles statewide, including throughout Bergen County. A motor vehicle left on a public road, highway, or other public property, or on private property without consent, for more than 48 hours is presumed abandoned and may be impounded. On Bergen County-owned roads and county properties, the Bergen County Police Department coordinates removal. On local streets, municipal police handle towing under the same statute. Owners receive notice through MVC and have a redemption window before the vehicle is auctioned or scrapped under N.J.S.A. 39:10A-1.
Vehicles are towed at the owner's expense; storage fees accrue daily, and unredeemed vehicles are sold at public auction or destroyed.
