Cambridge removes abandoned vehicles under MGL c.90 s.22D, with Parking Control tagging vehicles that appear abandoned and towing them after a statutory notice period.
Under Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 90, Section 22D and Cambridge ordinance, any motor vehicle left on a public way appearing to be abandoned (expired registration/inspection, flat tires, extensive damage, no movement over 72 hours) may be tagged and ultimately towed. Cambridge Parking Control Officers investigate iReport/311 complaints. A warning sticker is placed, and after the statutory period the vehicle is towed to an authorized facility. Owners can reclaim by paying tow and storage fees and correcting the abandonment condition. Unclaimed vehicles are eventually sold or scrapped. Abandoned vehicles on private property are also prohibited under zoning and sanitary code and must be removed by the property owner.
