Alabama Code Β§32-13-1 defines abandoned motor vehicles as those left unattended on public property over 48 hours, or vehicles stored in inoperable condition. Jefferson County Sheriff's Office tags abandoned vehicles with a 72-hour removal notice. If not moved, the vehicle may be towed to an impound lot. On private property, Birmingham Code Β§10-5-1 requires inoperable vehicles to be stored in an enclosed garage or behind a 6-foot opaque fence not visible from the street. Vehicles without current Alabama registration displayed may be cited. Alabama Code Β§32-13-3 sets the notification and auction procedures for unclaimed impounded vehicles.
Notice period: 72 hours for public property, 10-30 days private. Towing and storage at owner expense ($150-$500 plus daily storage). Private property violation fines: $100-$500 per Birmingham Code Β§10-5-1.
