Indiana's abandoned-vehicle law, IC 9-22-1, lets police tag and tow vehicles left on public property, and inoperable or unplated junk vehicles left in view on private land are separately cited as a nuisance by city and county code enforcement.
Under IC 9-22-1 a vehicle left unattended on a public street or property for the statutory period, or one that is wrecked, junked, or unregistered, may be declared abandoned. In unincorporated Elkhart County the Sheriff takes the report, tags the vehicle, and arranges towing, after which the last owner is notified and owes towing and storage costs. Within the cities of Elkhart and Goshen, police and code enforcement handle abandoned and nuisance vehicles. On private property an inoperable, wrecked, or unplated vehicle left visible from the street is handled as a nuisance and must be removed, repaired, or screened from view. Keeping current registration is the simplest way to avoid an abandoned classification.
An abandoned vehicle is towed and stored at the owner's expense under IC 9-22-1, and unclaimed vehicles proceed to sale; a nuisance junk vehicle on private land draws a correction order and daily fines if uncorrected.
