Abandoned and inoperable vehicles are handled under the Illinois Vehicle Code (625 ILCS 5) and Peoria's city code. Separately, a motor vehicle that is inoperable, damaged, or in need of repair for 30 days or more and sits on private property outside an enclosure that hides it from view is declared a nuisance. A nuisance inoperable vehicle draws a fine of $25 to $100 for each offense, with each day a separate offense. An abandoned street vehicle is impounded and, if unclaimed, sold at auction at the owner's expense.
