Under N.J.S.A. 39:4-56.5, abandoning a vehicle on a highway, other public property, or private property without consent is unlawful across Atlantic County. A vehicle left over 48 hours, or with no plates, is presumed abandoned.
New Jersey law N.J.S.A. 39:4-56.5 makes it unlawful to abandon a motor vehicle on or along any highway, other public property, or on private property without the owner's consent. A vehicle that stays in place more than 48 hours, or any period without current license plates, is presumed abandoned. Atlantic County municipalities — Atlantic City, Egg Harbor Township, Galloway, Absecon, and the shore towns — enforce this alongside local ordinances, tagging suspected vehicles and then towing them to a licensed impound. State law and local property-maintenance codes also bar storing unregistered or inoperable vehicles in open view on residential lots.
A first offense carries a fine of not less than $100 nor more than $500; subsequent violations run $500 to $1,000. The vehicle is towed and impounded, and the owner pays towing and storage before recovery.
