A vehicle is abandoned under Texas Transportation Code 683.002 after 48 hours left on public property or on private property without the owner's consent; law enforcement may then tow it.
Texas Transportation Code 683.002 defines an abandoned motor vehicle as one that is inoperable, over five years old, and left on public property more than 48 hours; left illegally on public property more than 48 hours; or left on private property without the owner's consent more than 48 hours. In unincorporated Williamson County the Sheriff's Office takes abandoned-vehicle reports, tags the vehicle, and can have it towed to a storage facility. The last owner receives notice and owes towing and storage costs.
An abandoned vehicle is towed and stored at the last owner's expense; unclaimed vehicles are sold at public auction under Transportation Code Chapter 683.
