Stafford treats abandoned and junked vehicles on public or private property as a public nuisance subject to notice, removal, and disposal by the city.
Stafford's local code, in conjunction with Texas Transportation Code Chapter 683, allows the city to declare wrecked, dismantled, inoperable, or unregistered vehicles left in public view a nuisance. After identifying a junked vehicle, the city provides written notice to the registered owner and last known property owner, giving an opportunity to remove or restore the vehicle. If the vehicle is not removed in the required period, Stafford may abate the nuisance by towing and disposing of the vehicle. Vehicles abandoned on public property may be impounded under Chapter 50 procedures.
Failure to remove a junked vehicle after notice can result in municipal court citations, daily fines, and city-initiated removal at the owner's expense.
