Inyo County restricts heavy commercial vehicles in specific places. In Independence, trucks rated 10,000 pounds or more are banned from a designated residential stretch of South Washington Street between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. Chapter 10.36 also addresses weight limitations on certain county highways.
Inyo County addresses commercial-vehicle parking through Title 10, Chapter 10.36 (Stopping, Standing and Parking), which includes both an Independence-specific overnight ban and broader weight-limitation provisions for designated county highways. Per the 2017 Board of Supervisors action, commercial vehicles with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of 10,000 pounds or more are prohibited from parking on South Washington Street, from the intersection of West Park Street to the intersection of West Citrus Street, within a residential district between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m. The chapter further contains weight-limitation provisions addressing the closing of particular county highways to certain vehicles. Because Inyo County is rural and dominated by Highway 395, much commercial-truck regulation (size, weight, and through-route limits) is also handled under the California Vehicle Code and Caltrans signage on state routes. Commercial-vehicle storage on private property in the unincorporated area is regulated by the Title 18 zoning ordinance by district. The Board of Supervisors may designate additional restricted streets and weight limits by resolution.
Commercial-vehicle parking violations are cited under Chapter 10.36 and the California Vehicle Code. Vehicles in violation may be removed under California Vehicle Code Section 22651.
