Commercial vehicle operation and parking in Erie are governed by Article 511 (Commercial Vehicles) of the City of Erie Traffic Code and the commercial-vehicle parking limit in Article 521. Commercial vehicles in the City must operate only on designated truck routes, and no commercial vehicle with a chassis weight in excess of 3,000 pounds may stand or park on any street for more than two hours, except service vehicles actively engaged in work nearby.
Article 511 of the Erie Codified Ordinances (Commercial Vehicles) requires that all commercial vehicles in the City be operated only over and along the truck routes established by the City and on no other street; a truck route is defined as a way over certain designated City streets along which commercial vehicles must operate. Article 521 (Parking Generally) layers on a strict parking time limit: no person shall stand or park any commercial vehicle with a chassis weight in excess of 3,000 pounds at any time on any street for a period of time in excess of two hours, except for vehicles of service companies, contractors, repairmen or others actually engaged in working operations in the vicinity during the actual period of work. The Erie Parking Authority issues a separate Contractor Parking Permit program for contractors working at job sites within the City. The Pennsylvania Vehicle Code (75 Pa.C.S.) and Title 67 of the Pennsylvania Code provide the broader statutory framework, with these local Article 511 and 521 rules adding the city-specific layer. Enforcement is by the Erie Police Bureau and the Erie Parking Authority on metered and signed streets.
Violating the Article 521 commercial-vehicle two-hour limit is subject to a parking fine of $55 if paid within 10 days, increasing by $10 if paid on the 11th through 30th day, and increasing by an additional $20 if not paid within 30 days. Operating a commercial vehicle off the designated Article 511 truck route is a Traffic Code violation enforceable as a summary offense. Vehicles in violation are subject to immediate removal and impoundment under Article 527 of the Traffic Code and the underlying authority of 75 Pa.C.S. Β§3353.3.
