Lynchburg, VA Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Section 25-262(a) of the City Code targets commercial and oversized vehicles on residential streets. Any vehicle heavier than 7,500 pounds gross weight, other than a passenger vehicle, pickup, or panel truck, cannot be parked or left standing on a residential street for any purpose except unloading and delivering, picking up and loading merchandise, materials or passengers, or making a service call. Even a truck engaged in one of those permitted activities cannot remain longer than 48 hours. The prohibition carves out city projects: vehicles working on city-owned property, public streets, sewers, or utility lines are exempt outright.

Contractors doing non-city utility or construction work can also exceed the 48-hour cap, but only with prior written permission from the city traffic engineer, who reviews requests case by case. Subsection (c) adds a safety condition: while an oversized vehicle is temporarily parked on a residential street, it must be positioned so it does not impede or endanger the use of the street by others, meaning a truck cannot straddle a lane or block sightlines even during a permitted stop.
