Butte County, CA Parking Rules: Commercial & Oversized Vehicles (2026)

Butte County's Zoning Ordinance (Chapter 24) regulates where commercial vehicles, heavy equipment, and vehicle-related businesses may be parked or stored. Under the Industrial Zones use table (Section 24-26-1), Heavy Equipment Storage is a Permitted use (P) in the Light Industrial (LI), General Industrial (GI), and Heavy Industrial (HI) zones, subject to the Section 24-173 standards. Vehicle Repair and Vehicle Service and Maintenance are Permitted in all three industrial zones; Vehicle Sales and Rental requires a Minor Use Permit. None of these uses appears as Permitted, Administrative, Minor, or Conditional in the residential zones (FR, FCR, RR, RCR, VLDR, VLDCR, LDR, MDR, MHDR, HDR, VHDR) - they are simply "-" (use not allowed).

1 separately establishes a Heavy Equipment Storage standard for the VLDR zone, allowing storage of heavy equipment used by individual contractors/drivers for off-site commercial jobs subject to minimum standards and permit requirements. The Zoning Ordinance defines Vehicle Repair, Vehicle Sales and Rental, Vehicle Service and Maintenance, and Warehousing/Wholesaling/Distribution (which includes vehicle storage) as distinct commercial/industrial uses in Article 42, Glossary (Sec. 24-304).
