Floyd County, IN Parking Rules: Driveway Rules (2026)

Chapter 153's driveway permit provisions apply countywide outside the City of New Albany and the Towns of Georgetown and Greenville, under authority the Board of Commissioners exercised through the Indiana Code. Section 153.18 fixes the physical standards a driveway must meet. Under Section 153.18(B), a driveway must have a back-out area with a turning radius of at least 90 degrees. Section 153.18(D) requires a minimum width of 24 feet at the point where the driveway meets the public road, along with an unobstructed sight distance of 300 feet at that location.

Section 153.18(E) requires a leveling area at the intersection appropriate to the site's topography and caps driveway slope at 10%. Section 153.18(F) requires the driveway to be set back at least five feet from adjoining property lines. Section 153.18(C) further requires a sight visibility triangle at intersections in which structures, trees, non-agricultural vegetation and signs cannot be placed or allowed to grow between three and eight feet high. Section 153.18(G) requires a culvert at the ditch line, at least 18 inches in diameter unless the County Infrastructure Coordinator/Engineer approves a smaller one or none, and Section 153.18(I) requires shared driveways to carry a recorded maintenance agreement binding future owners. Waivers of these requirements can be granted only by the Board of Commissioners under Section 153.18(K), with the applicant covering any engineering review cost.
